European Microsoft Innovation Center (EMIC)
The European Microsoft Innovation Center (EMIC) in Aachen, Germany is one of the Microsoft facilities dedicated to research and development in Europe.
Microsoft is the worldwide leader in software, services and business solutions. In 2006 the Microsoft Corporation had revenue of € 36.5 billion Euro. The European Microsoft Innovation Center is unique to Microsoft in its focus on collaborative applied research and its goal of contributing to European Commission and other public-sector research programs.
Founded in 2003, EMIC works on collaborative information technology projects that capitalize on Europe’s established technology strengths and reflect the region’s priorities. Working closely together with academic institutions and industry partners, EMIC concentrates its efforts on security, mobile technologies, web services, eHome, software verfification and embedded software.
Within the sixth Framework Program of the European commission, EMIC is actively involved in a dozen major integrated projects and targeted research projects that all contribute to the evolution of cross-technology products and standards in the above mentioned areas. Since April 2003, more than 40 scientists and engineers from 10 countries have pursued collaborative applied research at the center’s Aachen facility together with more than 100 partners. This international team combines scientists who worked at renowned universities and in industry before joining Microsoft, with engineers equipped with strong experience in the development of software products. This team is reinforced by many postgraduate students and visitors from European universities.
Contribution within the Consequence project:
The European Microsoft Innovation Center (EMIC) has two major roles in the project:
• Framework development: EMIC will be responsible for the overall architecture of the Consequence framework (WP1) where it will utilize Microsoft experience and methodologies in enterprise software development.
• Technological development: EMIC will work on Enforcement technology for the Consequence framework (WP4). This work will be based on long experience with security and data distribution control gained in Microsoft. EMIC will also work on infrastructure for Data Sharing Agreement (WP2) and Policy infrastructure (WP3).
• Coordination. EMIC will be the coordinator of the project.
Finally EMIC expects to be very active in the exploitation of the project results.
